RECOMMENDED FEEDING FOR SHOW PIGS

STAR SHOW 2016

SHOW PREPARATION

ITEMS YOU NEED TO BUY:

  1. POWDERED ELECTROLYTES
  2. CHERRY KOOL-AID
  3. BAG OF WOOD SHAVINGS FOR YOUR PEN AT THE SHOW

ITEMS PROVIDED BY THE AG DEPT.:

  1. 4-SURE SHOW SHAKE MIX
  2. RE-SORB ELECTROLYTE AND DEXTROSE MIX

 FRIDAY, Feb. 26:

TURN OFF YOUR AUTOMATIC WATER SOURCE. IN THE EVENING AFTER THEY HAVE EATEN.  THIS MUST BE DONE BY CLOSING THE VALVE TO THE AUTOMATIC WATERING NIPPLE IN THE PEN.  BE SURE TO KEEP PIGS COOL AS THEY WILL HAVE NO WAY OF COOLING THEMSELVES OFF.  SINCE PIGS AT THE FARM SHARE A WATERER, MAKE SURE THE OWNER OF THE OTHER PIG IS AWARE OF THE SITUATION.  IF NOT, MOVE YOUR PIG TO AN EMPTY PEN WHERE YOU CAN SHUT THE WATER VALVE.

IF YOUR PIG WEIGHS LESS THAN 225 LBS, DO NOT DO THIS!

SATURDAY, Feb. 27 THROUGH  WEDNESDAY MORNING,  Mar. 2 :

FEED NORMAL FEED. (NORMAL MEANS FEED THE SAME WAY YOU HAVE BEEN FEEDING)

MIX ABOUT A GALLON OF WATER WITH A TEASPOON OF ELECTROLYTES AND KOOL-AID AND WATERTHE HOG TWICE DAILY WITH THE MIXTURE.   SOMETIMES IT IS BETTER TO DO THIS BEFORE YOU FEED. IF YOUR PIG DRINKS EVERYTHING, GO AHEAD AND GIVE HER SOME MORE.  WE ARE NOT LIMITING WATER AT THIS POINT, WE JUST WANT TO GET THEM USED TO DRINKING OUT OF A PAN.  DO NOT LEAVE WATER IN THE PENWHEN YOUR PIG QUITS DRINKING, REMOVE THE MIXTURE.

IF YOUR PIG IS LIGHT AND YOU DID NOT TURN OFF YOUR WATER SOURCE, ADD THE ELECTROLYTES TO YOUR FEED.  TRY TO GET THEM DRINKING THE KOOL-AID MIX BY OFFERING IT TO THEM TWICE A DAY BEFORE YOU FEED.

THURSDAY, MAR. 3:   SHOW DAY:

FEED AS DIRECTED AT THE SHOW.

TWO HOURS PRIOR TO GOING INTO THE RING:

GIVE YOUR CALF-CALM (IF NEEDED) WITH A HANDFUL OF WET FEED.

APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR BEFORE GOING INTO THE RING:

MIX 4-SURE WITH ABOUT 1 SMALL COFFEE CAN OF WATER AND GIVE IT TO YOUR PIG.

I AM NOT A FAN OF AUTOMATIC WATERERS AT THE SHOW!!!

ALL THEY DO IS MAKE IT HARDER TO GET WATER, ELECTROLYTES, 4-SURE AND RESORB MIXTURES INTO THE PIGS AT THE RIGHT TIME.

PRECONDITIONING AND CONDITIONING OF A SHOW PIG

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT, AND YET MOST OVERLOOKED, PARTS A SHOWING A PIG IS MAKING THEM LOOK AS MUCH LIKE A CHAMPION AS POSSIBLE ON THE DAY THAT THEY SHOW.   THE FOLLOWING IS A SCHEDULE FOR GETTING YOUR PIG READY TO SHOW SO THAT SHE MAY LOOK HER BEST ON SHOWDAY.

PRECONDITIONING:

  1. RINSE YOUR PIG DAILY FOR THE WEEK PRIOR TO THE SHOW.

  2. WASH YOUR PIG AT LEAST 3 TIMES WITH A CONDITIONING SHAMPOO OR GO-JO TYPE HAND CLEANER FOR THE WEEK PRIOR TO THE SHOW.

  3. ON THE DAYS THAT YOU WASH, PRECONDITION YOUR PIG’S SKIN WITH BABY OIL, PURPLE OIL OR A SKIN CONDITIONER FROM ONE OF THE SHOW SUPPLY COMPANIES.  LEAVE IT ON YOUR PIG FOR 10 – 15 MINUTES, THEN WASH IT OFF WITH SOAP. NOTE: DO NOT LEAVE THE OIL ON YOUR PIG WITHOUT WASHING AS IT CAN CAUSE SEVERE SUN BURNS EVEN ON CLOUDY DAYS.

  4. WALK YOUR PIG FOR 15 MINUTES PER DAY.  THIS WILL HELP IT TO BE IN GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION FOR THE SHOW RING ON SHOW DAY.

    CONDITIONING:

  1. TWO HOURS BEFORE YOU EXPECT TO GO INTO THE RING, GIVE YOUR PIG A TUBE OF CALF-CALM.  (ESPECIALLY IF YOUR PIG IS A RUNNER)

  2. ONE HOUR BEFORE YOU EXPECT TO GO INTO THE RING, MIX YOUR FOR SURE  WITH ABOUT 1/3 CAN OF WATER AND GIVE IT TO YOUR PIG.  THIS WILL BE DIGESTED VERY QUICKLY AND WILL GIVE YOUR PIG MORE MUSCLE TONE.

  3. JUST PRIOR TO ENTERING THE RING, COMPLETELY COAT YOUR PIG WITH WATER OR SHOW SHEEN.  A WET PIG WILL LOOK FRESHER AND SHOW MORE MUSCLE DEFINITION.

  4. ONCE IN THE RING, KEEP YOUR PIG MOVING SLOWLY, PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT IS GOING ON AND GOOD LUCK!

Today is 27 days before the S.T.A.R. hog show

Feeding Reccommendations For the last 25 days

In order to prepare your pig for the S.T.A.R. Show, here are a few reccommendations:

  1.  If you are feeding Lindner’s Feeds, start mixing 611 with what you are feeding right now.  This is a show prep ration and will give your pig more bloom.

  2. Add ½ cup of milk replacer to your feed.  Make sure the milk replacer you are adding is non-medicated!!  You can add it dry or mix it with water and feed it wet.

  3.  Start walking your pig in the arena at about 10 minutes a day.  At first, just let the pig walk around for about 10 minutes.  After about three days of that, start using your show stick to guide the pig in the direction you want it to go for 10 minutes a day.

  4. Rinse your pig on a regular basis and wash it with soap about once a week.  As we get closer to the show, cover your pig in baby oil, leave it on for about 10 minutes and then wash it off with soap.

  5.  Feed at the same times every day…consistency is the key.

  6. Some pigs that need more middle (depth of body) might need to add a filler to their feed.  Depth Charge and T-N-T have been working very well for this and can be found at the feedstore.

  7.  Weigh your pig regularly.  This will allow you to keep up with his/her weight gain and will train him/her to enter the scales.

  8. Below is a list of when you should start feeding Paylean and how much to feed to each individual pig.  Most of you paid for Paylean through the chapter at the beginning of the year and I will have that for you.

  9. Once you start feeding Paylean, you need to treat you pig’s hooves with Dr. Naylor’s Hoof and Heel.  This can be found at the feedstore.  Paylean dries the hoof out and this will help prevent lameness due to cracked hooves.
